people + passion

Nurturing talent

At MITIE we are committed to finding the right people, motivating them in the right way and coming up with the right development plans.

We also believe in communicating with them every step of the way wherever they work. We are dedicated to implementing a comprehensive and proactive people strategy with policies to ensure that all employees are treated equally, fairly, and in a responsible manner.

Our people priorities, within our sustainability strategy align with our founding philosophy that was established over two decades ago; to create opportunities and provide the right environment to enable our people to reach their full potential.

Our talent management strategy is also influenced by external commercial drivers to ensure that we provide the world-class service our customers expect. We make a significant investment in the training and career development of our people and offer a comprehensive range of courses linked with nationally recognised programmes.

Courses range from NVQ literacy and numeracy qualifications to cultural awareness and diversity training as well as a wide range of technical and professional qualifications to make sure our people are fully capable of meeting the challenges they face at work.

We also have a range of internal awards to recognise the efforts our people make in going the extra mile. The MITIE Stars scheme is a way of saying ’thank you’ for their commitment and dedication.

We pride ourselves on developing new talent and this is clearly demonstrated through our practice of employing and providing vocational training for apprentices. We are one of the largest employers of trade apprentices in the UK, currently employing 526 across MITIE. This represents an increase of more than 25% over the last 12 months.

What is our objective?

To make sure we have the right talent pipeline to fulfil all the business’s future needs.

How will we achieve this?

  1. By setting clear behavioural expectations via an updated performance management framework that’s clearly aligned with our core values to ensure our people understand how best to manage their teams to help us achieve our goals by 2012;
  2. Understand what the vital steps are for leadership and management development, defining what support is required at each level by 2012;
  3. Identify the key roles for which we need to establish MITIE’s successor population by 2012;
  4. Create a year-round people engagement plan that will establish a core set of measures pan-MITIE by 2012, against which future progress will be tracked;
  5. Run an internal volunteering campaign during 2012 to communicate volunteering opportunities and increase participation rates across MITIE. To learn more about our people’s talents please view http://sustainability2011.mitie.com/nurturing-talent.aspx
