Working safely

At MITIE our people are the greatest asset we have and their well-being is of paramount importance.

We’ve always taken health and safety responsibilities very seriously and have won several RoSPA awards including gold to support this however, even with our great track record we recognise that there’s always more that can be done.

Our Work Safe Home Safe! Campaign, which is now entering its third phase, allows us to think about best practice behaviours and clearly demonstrates how much MITIE cares about the health and safety of its people both in and out of the workplace.

We have this year launched the Work Safe, Home Safe awards and nominations have been invited for three categories:

  1. Best business implementation of the Work Safe Home Safe! campaign to date;
  2. Best team approach to Work Safe Home Safe;
  3. Work Safe Home Safe Champion.

The reward will be a 2011 trophy as well as a gala lunch with MITIE’s CEO Ruby McGregor-Smith.

Because of the nature of the business services we offer, we operate in many challenging environments and hence our people are exposed to a wide variety of workplace hazards posing varying degrees of risk. Consequently, managing this risk via formal health and safety management systems is key to maintaining safe working environments for our people and continually improving our health and safety performance.

Our management systems based approach provides a structured programme to identify hazards, assess risk and implement effective control measures to review performance and ensure that we are always improving.

Our businesses certify their health and safety management systems against the requirements of an internationally recognised standard (OHSAS 18001), via an independent third party NQA, to ensure an objective view of our performance and identification of formal opportunities for improvement.

We believe health and safety accountability and responsibility begins at the top of the organisation and visible top-down commitment is critical in ensuring our systems and standards for health and safety management are adhered to throughout MITIE. For this reason we train all our employees to ensure that they have the required knowledge, competencies and skills to carry out their work in the right way.

This year we embarked on a new approach to health and safety leadership that will, we believe, further embed the leadership skills of our senior managers and strongly support the significant level of operational training that we undertake every year.

What is our objective?

To make sure the well-being of our people, and by extension our clients, is safeguarded while at work so they can all go home safe at the end of the day.

How will we achieve this?

  • Provide improved MI through a new incident management platform across all operational business to enable more effective measurement of a better range of health and safety related KPIs. Introduce an improved incident root cause investigation methodology for all relevant incidents with a target of 100% during 2012.
  • Launch the third phase of our health and safety risk management leadership programme to embed the correct leadership attributes within our management.
  • Launch the third phase of our Work Safe Home Safe! Campaign in 2012 to deliver improved employee engagement.
